Here’s a list of questions people commonly ask me.
What does ‘Charbel’ mean?
Well, it doesn’t mean anything from a translation point of view. It’s the name of a Lebanese Saint—St. Charbel Maklouf—and my parents (of Lebanese origin) named me after him. But it doesn’t translate to anything in Arabic the way ‘hummus’ means garbanzo bean. (See nickname question below)
How do you pronounce your name anyway?
My name is phonetically pronounced [ shár - b'l –– seh - máhn ]. Contrary to popular belief, my first and last names are NOT pronounced in the following ways:
- Charble, Charbell, Sharbell, Sherble, and no, not even Charmin á la my high school geometry teacher
- Seaman, SeeMAN, Sehmen, Saymon, and everyone’s favorite, Semen
What do you do exactly?
